Industrial Ethernet

Industrial Ethernet offers a high-performance area and cell network to the IEEE 802.3 (ETHERNET) standard. Furthermore, Ethernet is the technology on which the Internet is based and offer the numerous advantages of worldwide networking. The wide range of possibilities offered by the Intranet, Extranet and Internet which are already available in the office environment can also be used in production automation and process automation. The already well-proven Ethernet technology in combination with Switching Full Duplex and Autosensing gives you the opportunity to match the performance in your network more precisely to the requirements. You can also select the data transmssion rate according to requirements because the system-wide compatibility permits step-by-step introduction of the new technology. Ethernet is, with its 80 % market share, the network No.1 in the LAN landscape worldwide. Ethernet offers important characteristics that can give you significant benefits for your application:

Profibus

PROFIBUS is the bus system for communication in small cell networks and with field devices. It is based on the IEC 61158/EN 50170 European Standard, Volume 2, PROFIBUS. In this way PROFIBUS ensures an open system for connecting the components of other manufacturers that conform to the standard.

PROFIBUS - the standard in field installations - comprises:

  • Defining the standards for the physical bus level and for access methods (layers 1 and 2 of the ISO Reference Model).
  • Defining the user protocol and the user interface PROFIBUS-FMS (layer 7) for communication between programmable controllers and field devices.
  • PROFIBUS-DP for fast, cyclic data exchange with field devices.

PROFIBUS meets the requirements for simple cabling in electrical and optical transmission technology. This makes it possible to cover great distances.

ASI

The AS-Interface bus system transfers process and machine-level digital and analog signals. Proximity switches, valves, indicator lights and other actuators and sensors can be linked over a 2-wire cable to PLCs, e.g. SIMATIC controllers or PCs. Data and supply voltage data are transported together over a single cable.

IntraVUET was developed to fill a gap between existing IT networking tools and what is needed to support Ethernet applications on the plant floor. It has been specifically developed with the goals of simplicity of use. The features and capabilities centered on the requirement to manage groups of distributed Ethernet nodes. The need for such a package is growing as more devices are being connected to Ethernet. Ethernet 10 years ago may have existed on the plant floor but usually connecting only PCs and, possibly, very large PLCs or CNCs. The drive to Ethernet, accelerated by ModbusTCP, EtherNet/IP, Foundation Fieldbus HSE, and PROFInet is dramatically increasing the number of connection points on the plant floor.

IntraVUE dynamically discovers, using multiple TCP/IP mechanisms, all nodes that exist on an Ethernet network. A Database is created containing specific details from all managed switches and SNMP enabled devices. The Web browser can then access the IntraVue server to visualize the exact physical network topology and status of all connected devices.
