SIRIUS Motor Starter Protectors (MSP) - 3RV

SIRIUS 3RV MSP's are compact, current-limiting protection device. They ensure safe shutdown in the event of a short-circuit and protect loads and plants against overload. Furthermore, they are also suitable for manually switching loads under field conditions and safely isolating the equipment from the main power supply when maintenance work or modifications need to be undertaken.

Just like all SIRIUS devices, the MSP's are suitable for side-by-side mounting up to . In addition to the usual CLOSED/OPEN positions the TRIPPED position is also indicated. SIRIUS MSP's can be connected easily and without any wiring to the .

3RV10 MSP’s can be used in a variety of applications:

• As a Manual Starter: All 3RV MSP’s are CSA approved as Manual Motor Controllers per CSA 22.2. This makes them ideal for applications requiring simple manual starting and stopping of motors. A separate short circuit protective device, such as a circuit breaker or fuses, is still required ahead of the MSP.
• As a Self-protected Manual Combination Starter: Most 3RV MSP’s have also been CSA approved, UL listed as UL508 Type E, Self-protected Manual Combination Starters. This UL listing allows the MSP to be mounted in a manually operated machine without having to add separate short circuit protection upstream.
• As a Component in a Combination Starter: By using a connecting module, a 3RT10 contactor can be directly mounted to the load side of a 3RV MSP. This assembly of a 3RV and a 3RT provides a complete, remotely operated, combination starter.
• As a Component in a Group Installation: A group motor installation indicates multiple motor controllers under one short circuit protective device, such as circuit breaker. 3RV MSP’s have a group installation short circuit current rating of 50kA at 480V and 10kA at 600V. By using a connecting module, a 3RT contactor can be directly mounted to the load side of the MSP. 3RV MSP’s have been UL tested with and without 3RT contactors for group installation..

Group Motor Applications

The need for individual short-circuit protective devices such as fuses is eliminated with group motor applications; this saves both installation expense and panel space. ABB Line Manual Motor Starters are UL listed and can be used in group installations of motors.

Single Motor Applications

ABB manual motor starters provide overload protection as required by the National Electrical Code. Control is provided by manual operation of the contacts; overload protection is provided by an adjustable bi-metallic trip mechanism.

ABB offers 4 types of Manual Motor Protectors to cover the range of motors from 10HP to 100HP:

• Type MS116: Suitable for use with 3-phase motors up to 10HP @ 600V, UL listed and CSA certified for Group Motor Installation up to 18KA, and provides 12 setting ranges from 0.1 to 16 amps.

Type MS325: Suitable for use with 3-phase motors up to 20HP @ 600V, UL listed and CSA certified for Group Motor Installation up to 85KA, and provides 14 setting ranges from 0.1 to 25 amps.

Type MS45x: Suitable for use with 3-phase motors up to 50HP @ 600V, UL listed and CSA certified for Group Motor Installation up to 65KA, and provides 7 setting ranges from 11 to 50 amps.

Type MS49x: Suitable for use with 3-phase motors up to 100HP @ 600V, UL listed and CSA certified for Group Motor Installation up to 65KA, and provides 6 setting ranges from 28 to 100 amps.
