Failsafe Drives

Safety systems are intended to protect man and machine against hazardous situations. Frequently, it is not sufficient to prevent access to hazardous areas and zones by just providing protective devices and equipment around the machine in the form of hardware. As soon as manual interventions must be made in the hazardous zones of machines, additional safety functions are required.
The classic safety solution is to stop the machine by simply isolating the drive from the line supply in conjunction with mechanical equipment. However, this solution requires a considerable amount of wiring, circuitry and monitoring. State-of-the-art solutions integrate the safety technology into the drive and permit user-friendly and flexible safety functions to be implemented, simplify safety concepts and ensure a high degree of reliability for an even faster response time. The result, the highest degree of safety and cost-effectiveness for your plant or system

Simatic ET200S FC Frequency Converter

The SIMATIC ET 200S FC frequency converter continuously controls the speed of induction motors and handles drive tasks with basic frequency control (V/f control up to sophisticated closed-loop vector control). The fail-safe SIMATIC ET 200S FC frequency converters provide autonomous, integrated safety functions, that are certified according to Category 3 in compliance with EN954-1 and in accordance with SIL 2 in compliance with IEC61508.

  • Motor starters and non-fail-safe drive converters can be operated together in an ET 200S station
  • Brief and reliable response times as a result of contactless control of the fail-safe functions via the PM-D F module
  • A contactor on the motor side is not required as a result of the safe standstill function
  • "Safely-reduced speed": Significantly lower costs when mounting, installing and wiring thanks to the sensorless monitoring
  • The drive can be safely stopped using the "safe braking ramp" function without requiring an encoder on the motor side
  • Simplified machine acceptance procedures thanks to certified modules
