FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Mini-VersaTRAK mIPm PLUS

The Ultimate Truly Open Enhanced RTU for Utility Industry Applications SIXNET's latest addition to their IPm product line is the Mini-VersaTRAK mIPm PLUS RTU. The mIPm+ (which stands for mini-IPm PLUS) is a compact unit with Ethernet, up to 4 serial ports and a built-in mix of 26 discrete and analog I/O. Like all of SIXNET's IPm Controllers and RTUs it is pre-loaded with open-source Linux and the IPm firmware which offers many advanced automation, control and data acquisition capabilities. The mIPm+ can be programmed using any mix of the ISaGRAF IEC61131-3 languages (ladder logic, sequential function chart, etc.).

In addition to all of these standard features, this special edition mIPm+ includes an abundance of memory and pre-loaded software for AGA gas flow calculations and DNP-3 time stamped communications with the needs of the utility industries in mind.

Inside the mIPm+, there is 64 Mb of flash disk and 32 Mb of fast dynamic memory, along with a 32 bit industrial PowerPC. The mIPm+ also offers a unique hot swap capability which minimizes downtime and makes it easier to keep a system running smoothly. The mIPm+ is UL/CSA/CE rated for -40 to +70°C operation, Class 1, Div. 2 (Zone 2) hazardous locations and marine/offshore applications.

Steve Schoenberg, CEO, states, "The mIPm+ is a complete RTU system that fits in the palm of your hand – the utility industries’ dream come true. It includes all of our powerful firmware, loaded with industrial automation features that are ready to use right out of the box. Plus, the open-source Linux makes it truly open and allows for ultimate flexibility. The new inclusions of AGA and DNP-3 make mIPm+ the ideal choice, in a compact footprint. Simply stated, it will make your job easier."

The mIPm+ can be programmed using any mix of the ISaGRAF IEC61131-3 languages (ladder logic, sequential function chart, etc.), high-level C/C++ and more. OEMs can even add their own applications, making the mIPm the perfect OEM product platform. It also offers many advanced features that do not require any programming. For example, with the supplied SIXNET I/O Tool Kit software users can configure datalogging and I/O transfer routines to occur periodically or on an event such as an alarm. This configuration software also allows users to import/export tag definitions, load custom programs, perform diagnostics and much more.

New in the mIPm+, additional memory capacity has allowed for inclusion of bundled software applications, without affecting performance, at no extra cost. The AGA gas flow calculations include AGA-3 (orifice plate), AGA-7 (turbine meter), AGA-8 (gas density), Accelabar from Veris and comply with the Chinese SY/6143-2004 standard. The addition of DNP-3 communications, the utility industry standard for time stamping events and verifying occurrence of required actions, provides a fully featured DNP-3 slave that is included to connect to any compliant DNP-3 master over a serial, wireless, or Ethernet link. Both applications software packages are easily configurable through the SIXNET I/O Tool Kit and run seamlessly with all other SIXNET IPm applications including ISaGRAF, SIXNET’s Sixlog, and ALL IPm I/O drivers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ASI SAFETY AT WORK

Distributed by Ontor Limited. Siemens Safety at Work concept supports the direct integration of safety-related components, such as EMERGENCY STOP switches, protective door switches or safety light arrays, in the AS-Interface network. These are fully compatible with the familiar AS-Interface components (masters, slaves, power supply units, etc.) in accordance with EN 50295 and are operated in conjunction with them on the yellow AS-Interface cable.
The signals of the safety sensors are evaluated by a safety monitor. The safety monitor does not only monitor the switching signals of the safety sensors, but also continuously checks whether the data transmission is functioning properly. The safety monitor has two two-channel release circuits which are used to put the machine or plant into a safe state. The sensors and monitor can be connected to any point of the AS-Interface network. It is also possible to use several monitors on a single network.
A failsafe control or special master are not required. The master treats safety slaves like all other slaves and receives the safety data for information only. In this way, all existing AS-Interface networks can also be expanded.
Safety at Work ensures that a maximum response time of 40 ms is achieved. This is the period between shutting down the output on the safety monitor and applying the signal on the input of the safe slave.
The system has been tested and approved by TÜV (German Technical Inspectorate). The transmission procedure for safety-related signals has been designed so that applications up to Category 4 can be implemented acc. to EN 954-1, or SIL 3 acc. to IEC 61 508.
The configuration SW can be used to compile the safety-related applications and transmit them to the monitor. The software also allows online diagnostics.
Ontor is a national distributor of Industrial Automation Systems. The corporate office is located in Toronto with regional offices in Montreal, Quebec City, Burlington, Windsor, Cambridge, Mississauga, Sudbury, Edmonton and Calgary.

Typical Problems, Superior Solutions with HG7 Filters

Non-linear Loads and the Impure Sine Wave
Non-linear loads are products that draw non-sinusoidal current from the distribution line. This nonsinusoidal current is derived from waveforms that combine the fundamental frequency with integral
multiples of that frequency. The resulting harmonic distortion is a basic result of the operation of nonlinear
loads. When these types of loads are a significant portion of an electrical system, harmonic distortion
may begin to cause problems throughout the entire system. These problems range from poor power factor,
transformer and distribution equipment overheating, random breaker tripping, or even sensitive equipment
failure. Since harmonics affect the overall power distribution system, the power utility may even levy heavy fines when a facility is affecting the utility’s ability to efficiently supply power to all of its customers. As a result, in the search for more efficient power use, other costly issues have been created.
Superior HG7 Performance
The HG7 not only limits current distortion to less than 7% TDD, it also improves true power factor.
Multiple package options will allow TCI customers to choose the right filter configuration for the application.
Since every power system is different, harmonic mitigation requirements will differ, and even IEEE limits
change based on the system loading characteristics. The HG7 product returns the power of choice to
the customer, allowing for different configurations to achieve different performance and monitoring
results. It is TCI’s intention to provide the maximum value to our customers by offering the package and performance necessary for the application.

True Power Factor Correction
“Real” or True power is used to perform real work. Inductive loads require Real and Reactive power. Utilities provide Apparent power. Apparent power is a geometric combination of Real and Reactive (or imaginary) power. Reactive power performs no work. However, the flow of reactive current, a component of reactive power, does consume energy as it passes through resistive elements of the power system. Thus, reducing overall system efficiency. This reactive power is used to generate magnetic fields within motors, transformers, and other magnetic devices. Reactive power, combined with harmonic currents, contribute to poor power factor in electrical systems. The capacitors inherent in the HG7 design supply the necessary reactive power so the utility doesn’t have to. The reduction in harmonic currents further improves the ratio of active power to apparent power. This overall improvement to true power factor assists in the efficient operation of facilities and the avoidance of possible fines due to poor power factor.

IEEE-519 1992 Harmonic Distortion Limits
In 1981, “Recommended Practices and Requirements for Harmonic Control in Electric Power Systems” was published. This document was the first attempt at establishing acceptable standards for distortion, both voltage and current, within the distribution system. Unfortunately, the original document did not address the users’ responsibility for contributing to the overall system distortion levels. Re-published in 1992, IEEE 519 set forth distortion limits for power users. These limits defined the maximum current and voltage distortion percentages allowable at the point of common coupling, commonly referred to as the PCC, under full load. These limits
are on a sliding scale based on system loading parameters.

Northern Ontario mine reduces energy costs by $750 000 annually

Distributed by Ontor Limited. In June 2005, KIDD Creek Mine in Timmins, Ontario started a new energy management initiative. Like most mines, the ventilation system at the nickel mine was known to provide a significant opportunity for energy reductions. Following an analysis of the ventilation system, it was determined that the main ventilation fans could be turned down by 50% for 23 hours a week.

The savings are achieved by reducing the volume of air at strategic times throughout the day. Twice daily, during shift changes, the ventilation system is turned down by fifty percent and ramped back up again when the workers begin operating.

The ventilation network is controlled by NRG-1; a web based energy management system. NRG-1 is produced by Bestech, a Sudbury-based engineering and software company. The implementation of the project took less than one month. Savings were realized immediately and continue to mount up.

WIRING SIMPLIFIED WITH MOLDING PRESSURE SENSORS

Distributed by Ontor Limited – Single wire technology for larger plastics molds use is now available from Kistler Instrument. Two improved pressure sensors extend the use of single wire conductors that replace coaxial cables. Kistler announced the advance with pressure sensors for small molding applications last year. This wiring mode speeds in-the mold pressure sensor installation and simplifies the dress of wiring. Procedures such as shortening cables and attachment to connectors are accomplished quickly, without the need to solder connections. Push on connectors enable slipping in stripped wires to make connections.
Kistler pressure sensors 6157B, front diameter 4mm, and 6152A, front diameter 6mm, use this single wire technology with wire lengths up to 5m. These sensors are equipped piezoelectric elements and operate in the high impedance, charge mode. Compact sensor amplifiers that often are remotely located, can now be added to the mold or designed into the mold because of this wiring convenience. Once in a production sequence, any wire damage occurring during the molding process is more easily repaired.

Load Washer Series Has Wide Measuring Range

A series of 8 load washers from Kistler Instrument measure dynamic and quasi-static forces from a few pounds of force to over 269,000. Each sensor has the unique capability to measure extremely small forces throughout any force level within total measuring range.

Precise quartz measuring elements have high rigidity to capture fast moving events.

Many mounting accessories enable high adaptability to a number of applications in production and metal processing. These force sensors are designed to use with charge amplifiers and process control monitors where the load washer captures parameter data that in turn with a controller, maintain assembly forces in tight tolerances, to eliminate variances that can lower yield.

Kistler is a worldwide supplier of precision instrumentation for the measurement of pressure, force and acceleration serving the R&D, Industrial and OEM Communities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

IP Security and SNMP Functions Available for Linux IPm Controllers and RTUs

New IP Security Protection and SNMP "add-on" features are available for use with SIXNET's VersaTRAK IPm Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), SixTRAK IPm Open DCS Controller, SixTRAK I/O Controller (OEM Linux model), and the new EtherTRAK Dual Ethernet Gateway.

The IP Security add-on feature is a firewall application which allows users to protect their controller/RTU from unauthorized access. A simple Security Rules Wizard in SIXNET's I/O Tool Kit is used to define rules that restrict access (incoming or outgoing) based upon IP address, IP ports, or any other capability of the IPtables Linux application which comes installed on IPm units as part of their standard firmware.

The SNMP add-on provides users with the ability to obtain valuable network management information from the SNMP agent (Simple Network Management Protocol) in their IPm controllers or RTUs. A Rules Wizard in the I/O Tool Kit configures the SNMP agent that has been integrated into the standard IPm firmware.

Puchase of a license is required to use either of these new add-on features with IPm units. Licenses may be obtained directly through SIXNET's Web Store at www.sixnetio.com. Once the license for the add-on has been purchased, users simply "unlock" the new capability using their I/O Tool Kit so they can make immediate use of the enhanced functionality. The latest version of SIXNET's I/O Tool Kit (v2.2) and IPm Firmware (v1.5+) are required, and are available at no charge through SIXNET's web site (where they can either be downloaded directly or requested on a free CD).

New Low Cost RemoteTRAK¨ RTU /
Combination I/O Module

The new RemoteTRAK¨ RTU / Combination I/O module (model RM-RTU-8440-F) combines a mix of I/O types (8 discrete inputs, 4 discrete outputs, 4 analog inputs) with a RS232/RS485 interface.

The RemoteTRAK¨ RTU is designed as an economical I/O solution for situations where you need: a low cost RTU at a remote site; poll I/O or Modbus devices on a RS485 party line; or expand the number of channels on a SIXNET EtherTRAK node.

The RemoteTRAK¨ RTU supports Modbus ASCII, RTU, and the SIXNET protocol. It also supports radio packeting and phone links. This enables users to poll the RemoteTRAK¨ RTU with an industrial modem (such as SIXNET's VT-MODEM) or radio using SIXNET or Modbus protocol.

All SIXNET I/O is engineered to withstand the abuse of harsh industrial environments. The RM-RTU-8440-F is surge and vibration resistant, operates in temperatures ranging from -40 to +70¡C, and is CE, UL, CSA, and Class 1, Division 2 (Zone 2) rated. The module also has Det Norske Veritas (DNV) No. 2.4 (Class A & B) certification for marine and offshore use. It is encased in rugged Lexan for added durability.
